We already have discussed some of the things we need to remember in preventing and protecting your photos and scrapbooking albums on the last post. Now we are going to concentrate on further protecting your scrapbooks and pages by proper storage. We will tackle the needed materials and some dos and don’ts.
The best practice for storing your scrapbooking albums is to use only storage boxes that are acid-free. After all that prevention of acid transfer, you simply cannot use simple cardboard boxes, envelopes, albums, or folders. They should also have the same quality as with your scrapbooking materials. You can also opt for acrylic or polyester plastics or might as well use glasses. The impact of these is that your projects will have more longetivity.
Use plastic sheets or page protectors in between your pages so that photos or other embellishments will not stick to each other. You can also use acid-free tissue paper between them.
For scrapbooks that are relatively flat, you can stack them flat. This way you can remove those warping of the paper. But if your work has a lot of embellishments and in 3D effect, make your scrapbooks stand, and make sure the pages are all upright as well.
When storing your scrapbooking albums, put into consideration the humidity and temperature. These two can also deteriorate your work, so make sure that they are balanced and are in correct threshold. Obtain about 50-55% relative humidity and 68-70°F temperature. You can maintain this kind of environment by turning off lights as much as possible, and air circulation is good. For those who reside near the ocean, make sure to control the storage environment. It is best if you use closets with proper ventilation or your library. The attics or basements can also be good if you can also control the temperature and humidity. But if not, they are not advisable as storage areas because they their temperature fluctuates too much.
These are only simple method on storing your photos and scrapbooking albums. So always make sure the materials to use for storing, additional protections, and the storage area and their environment.
